Vehicle Tracking

An individual vehicle GPS or fleet GPS tracking system records the location of the vehicle, as well as specific other data about the vehicle, such as where the vehicle is at any given time, average speed and distance traveled, opening or closing of a door, fuel amount, engine temperature, altitude, reverse geocoding, tire pressure, cut off fuel, turn on headlight, turn on taillight, battery status, or turning the vehicle on or off.  This ability and data is especially valuable for business or fleet vehicles where it assists the company in managing their transportation and fleet needs.  The fleet management functions such as fleet tracking, routing, dispatch, on-board information and security are vitally important to helping businesses improve their vehicle operations.

Other applications for vehicle GPS tracking include monitoring driving behavior, such as an employer monitoring an employee, or a parent monitoring a teen driver.  Vehicle tracking systems are also popular in consumer vehicles as a theft prevention and retrieval device. Police can follow the signal emitted by the tracking system and easily locate the stolen vehicle.  A vehicle GPS tracking system may serve as an addition to or replacement for traditional car alarms.  Some auto tracking systems make it possible to control the vehicle remotely, including block doors or engine in case of an emergency. In this way, it can possibly be used to reduce insurance costs, because the loss-risk of the vehicle drops significantly.

Some vehicle GPS tracking and navigation systems integrate several security systems, for example by sending an automatic alert to a phone or email if an alarm is triggered or the vehicle is moved without authorization.  This can bring peace of mind to those drivers that need to leave their vehicles in parking garages or lots that may or may not have surveillance for long periods of time.  A good example of this is those commuters who slug or ride-share into major metropolitan areas.  For the personal consumer, this service is often used by parents keeping track of their teen as they begin the adventures of driving.

Many modern vehicle GPS tracking devices combine both active and passive tracking abilities.  For instance, when a cellular network is available and a tracking device is connected, it transmits the data to a server;  when a network is not available, the device stores the data in an internal memory, and will either transmit stored data to the server later when the network becomes available or the device can be taken out and a manual download of the data can be performed.
